"Nopperabouzu" (faceless monster), which appears in "Daishinban Bakemono Zukushi" by Toyosada, an artist active in the late Edo period, is depicted as a creepy monster with no eyes, nose or mouth on its face. It suddenly appears on roads at night or in towns, inciting fear, but its shapeless face also makes it seem comical. It stimulated people's imaginations and had a strong impact on the common people of the time as an entity that reflects part of Edo's culture of the supernatural.
