In the Hokusai Gafu, Volume 2, created by Katsushika Hokusai in the late Edo period, Bishamonten, the guardian deity of victory in battle and treasure, is depicted in a dignified form. Clad in armor and holding a staff in his right hand and a pagoda in his left, his heroic stance symbolizes his power as one of the Four Heavenly Kings of Buddhism. Hokusai's distinctive detailed brushwork and powerful lines accentuate the majesty of the deity, and the work is regarded as having had a major impact on Japanese religious art while reflecting the faith of the common people at the time.
